Executive Summary

Definitions

Target load means how much work the player must finish inside the time limit. It is not just the number of objects; it is the total amount of task pressure the level asks the player to absorb.

Target count / weighted proxy separates the raw number of targets from a rough weighted task proxy. Target count is the visible count. Weighted proxy is a backend-side proxy that gives heavier targets more weight, so it is closer to the real task size than raw count alone.

Task-load pressure is the weighted proxy divided by the time limit. It approximates how much task work the player must complete per second. Higher values tend to increase timeout risk, especially when collision/bacteria interference is also high.

The 10-30 targets or 0.8-1.3 weighted-proxy/sec suggestion is a starting band for new Boss pressure tests, not a universal target. It means: keep the visible target count modest, or keep the time-normalized task load in a moderate range first. If a Boss level needs stronger interference, reduce target load or add time; if target load is high, do not also stack heavy collision/bacteria pressure.

Data Scope

Failure reason comes from stage result events: game_result=4 is timeout, game_result=3 is collision/bacteria, and game_result=2 is quit/other. Revive success is still calculated from result events where resurrection_times>0 and final game_result=1.

Important limitation: we can now compare each stage's final failure mix with its revive outcome, but a successful revived result ends as game_result=1. The current data does not directly tell whether that successful revive was originally triggered by timeout or collision. To answer that per revive attempt, the revive popup / revive accept event needs to carry the triggering failure reason.

Did Failure Reason Change The Focus-Level Decision?

The decision did not reverse; it became clearer. L69 / L79 / L84 are not simply "hard but harmless". Their pressure is mostly immediate collision/bacteria failure, and revive can still recover the state. L124 is different: timeout dominates, the player has already spent more time, and revive does not easily recover the task load.

Failure Reason And Revive Absorption

In the filtered sample, timeout share has a negative relationship with both revive success and player clear. The correlation is not large enough to be a standalone rule, but it is directionally useful: timeout-heavy levels are usually harder for revive to rescue.

Correlation is not a causal claim. It only says that in the current backend sample, timeout-heavy stages usually have weaker revive absorption. Final design decisions still need task load, time limit, collision/bacteria density, and player clear rate.

All Paid Stages

Payment pressure and failure reason should be read separately. High payment intensity does not only come from timeout stages. Many L166+ paid stages are collision/bacteria-led, but a stage is not automatically a repeatable template if player clear rate or revive success is weak.

Will Raising Pass Rates Hurt Payment?

It can, but the right reading is not “lower pass rate earns more”. The clearer pattern in the current sample is: when attempt clear rate rises, direct revive/payment triggers usually fall; when attempts per player and revive usage rise, orders per 100 challenge players rise. But once player clear rate or revive success drops into overload, the extra failure is no longer healthy monetizable pressure. It becomes blockage and retention risk.

The table below uses paid stages with at least 30 challenge players. “Mainline” means L1-L165. These are correlations, not causal proof, but they are useful for tuning direction.

Recommended Balance

Which Levels To Review

Copy direction: L69 / L79 / L84. These levels are collision/bacteria-led, revive success is high, and player clear remains high. The design pattern to copy is immediate, recoverable pressure, not simply a higher failure count.

Boundary direction: L149. L149 is a mixed-pressure Boss sample. Player clear is still high, but revive success is only 81.0%. It can be used as a boundary test, not as the default curve target.

Clear counterexample: L124. L124 is timeout-led, with low revive success and low player clear. Its issue is not that failure is too invisible; the issue is that task load and time pressure make revive weak.

New late-stage warning: L224. L224 is collision/bacteria-led, but attempts per player are about 3.01, player clear is 93.2%, and revive success is 70.3%. Collision failure can still overload players if the post-revive board state is not recoverable.

Comparison With All in Hole

When comparing with All in Hole, the key difference is not only target count. It is time-normalized load and failure type. O! Hole levels usually have shorter time limits, so the same amount of target work can become much higher per-second pressure.

After adding failure reason, the read is more concrete: pressure can monetize when it comes from collision/bacteria and the post-revive state is recoverable. If pressure comes from timeout, it usually means target load, weighted proxy, or time limit is too tight.

For new Boss pressure tests, start with 10-30 targets or roughly 0.8-1.3 weighted-proxy/sec. Add one guardrail: do not let timeout failures stay above 50%-60%. If timeout becomes the dominant failure reason, reduce task load or add time before relying on revive.

How To Reproduce Strong Levels

  1. Copy the failure type before copying the numeric difficulty. Strong pressure levels behave like L69 / L79 / L84: most failures are immediate collision/bacteria failures, and revive still lets players recover.
  2. Do not use L124 as the Boss pressure template. If a Boss level has strong interference, keep target load lower. If target load is high, reduce collision/bacteria concurrency or extend time.
  3. Watch three red lines. Player clear below 95%, revive success below 83%, and timeout share above 50%-60%. If any two appear together, the level should enter pressure review.
  4. Validate paid pressure in small batches. L166+ has higher normalized payment intensity but smaller samples. Review L209 / L239 / L234 / L229 as promising paid-pressure samples; treat L224-like stages carefully.

In result data, add fail duration, remaining target count, whether revive was accepted, and revive type. These fields would let us separate "revive after timeout" from "revive after collision/bacteria" at the attempt level, instead of only reading the relationship at stage level.
